Quick Answer

Edinburgh Castle opens at 9:30am daily. The best time to visit is September–October for good weather and manageable crowds, or January–March for the quietest experience. Avoid August — the Festival and Military Tattoo overlap with peak tourist season. Allow at least 2–3 hours for standard entry, or a half-day with a guided tour.

Four things most visitors get wrong.

01
Arriving without a timed ticket
Walk-up tickets are only available until online sales end for the day. In peak season the castle sells out completely. Book online before you leave your accommodation.
02
Not allowing enough time
Most visitors underestimate how much there is inside. Standard entry alone needs 2–3 hours minimum. Add a guided tour and allow a full half-day — at least 4 hours total.
03
Visiting in August without a plan
August is the busiest month in Edinburgh’s history. The Festival, Fringe, and Military Tattoo all overlap. Book 4–6 weeks ahead and arrive at opening (9:30am) to get ahead of the crowds.
04
Skipping the One O’Clock Gun
Fired every weekday at 1pm since 1861. Position yourself on the Argyle Battery or Esplanade at 12:55 — it’s one of the most memorable moments of any castle visit, and it’s completely free with entry.
